Dear haters,

I’ve seen a lot of you on Twitter recently using the hashtag #IDontNeedFeminism. I know everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but some of the tweets I have seen just show how uneducated people are about feminism. I hope that through this letter I will be able to show you that feminism is more than just gaining rights for women.

The first thing you should know is that feminism isn’t about women becoming equal or better in society than men. As Hooks states in her book Feminism is For Everybody, “…feminism is a movement to end sexism, sexist exploitation, and oppression” (Hooks, 1). One main aspect of feminism is that it is not just for women, but for men as well. Men have societal standards to be tough and masculine all the time, creating expectations for them that they sometimes cannot meet. Take this tweet for example:Tweet 1As you can see, this tweet helps to show gender stereotypes for both men and women. The man who sent this tweet shows that he feels that it is expected for him to participate in this martial arts match because exerting strength is something only men should do. Likewise, he makes it seem like women participating in athletics is wrong, and that just because these women are tough that they are more “manly” than he is.

Another aspect is that even today in the 21st century women are still being treated as property.Tweet 3As you can see, the person who tweeted this believes that even in 2016 Kim Kardashian should not be allowed to be a successful women, and that Kanye should have full control over her and be the only one in the relationship who is successful. According the National Women’s History Project, women have been treated like property in the past. According to the website, “married women were legally dead in the eyes of the law” and “husbands had legal power over and responsibility for their wives to the extent that they could imprison or beat them with impunity.” While this is from Elizabeth Stanton’s Declaration of Sentiments and is over a century old, it is clear that some people still believe that women should be their husband’s property.

As you can see by these tweets above, we do need feminism. While we do need it to help women have the same rights and be treated as equals to men, it is also important because men need to not be treated as if they need to be tough all the time and not be able to show emotions. It is important to know exactly what feminism is and how it will only benefit us as a society in the future.

Sincerely,
TJ
