I am contacting you in regards to the tweet you made on the 5th of April, 2016 at 8:33 pm. The post was tagged #IDontNeedFeminism and I would like to disprove your argument and show that feminism is still a very important movement in our country and across the world. I understand that one of the beauties of this country is that we are able to voice our own opinions, and I appreciate you sharing yours, I would just like you o also listen to mine.
First off, I would like to point out that feminism’s intent is to create equality
Between the rights of men and women. The Oxford dictionary defines feminism as “The advocacy of women’s rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men”. The definition of feminism becomes more complex when you realize that there are multiple types such as Liberal, Radical, and Marxist/socialist according to Rosemarie Tong in her book “Feminist Thought”.
Your tweet addresses your opinions on why you don’t need feminism. All of your statements talk about how your personally experiences in life, but they do not accept that all women’s experiences are the exact same as your own. You may personally think that you need feminism, but your reasoning cannot account for all women in the world.
You stated that you are not a victim. Does this mean that you do not believe that victims or people that consider themselves need feminism or equal rights? Do you realize that feminism allows you to live this life that you have, and gives you comforts that you are not even aware or?
You say that you hate men, but feminism at its core is about equality between men and women. As Cristen Conger brings up in her video on what feminism has actually changed, it is not about being a victim. It is about being able to move away from typical gender roles so the both men and women can do what is best for themselves. In very recent history, possibly within the lifetime of your own parents, a woman could not have held a credit card in her own name.
You don’t think you need feminism because you don’t think that it impacts you directly, however it has improved your entire life for the better. You are now able to voice these opinions that you have, which is something that you wouldn’t have been able to do in our countries recent past.
I just ask that you think about how your words impact your life, and not only the lives of the women you know, but also the lives of everyone on this planet. Feminism’s main goal is equality and not to put men above women.
