Dear Anti Feminist,

On November 12, 2014, you posted a number of tweets in which you displayed your distaste for feminism. I would like to respond to those tweets and share my thoughts on why I think you may have been led astray in your view of feminism.

In your first tweet, you say that the word feminism should be banned. First, I would want to know why you think this is such a terrible word? Feminism isn’t such a scary word when you consider that the feminist movement is actively breaking down some of the inequalities and injustices that women have been forced to endure. Maybe you feel as thought feminists aren’t making accomplishments throughout the world, but history has shown us otherwise. Maybe it’s the word feminism itself that bothers you. Can you think of another word that might better suit this movement?

Next, you go on to tweet that feminism is a crutch and that people should learn to “walk without it.” I personally don’t see feminism as crutch, but rather a support system that is only as good as the amount of people and voices it has backing it up. If we were to do away with this support system, much of the structure of our social system and all of the work that has been done to improve the lives of millions of people would come crashing down as well. I think if you were to have all of the accomplishments of feminism laid out in front of you, you might see that it isn’t a crutch as much as it is a support system working to eradicate the thousands of years of inequality that is constantly harming people all over the world.

Thank you for taking the time to read through my comments. Hopefully, we can have future discussions that will benefit and educate us both.

Sincerely,

Sarah
