I recently read the following BBC articles about a program in South Africa that awards scholarships to women who are able to prove their virginity. This is a clear example of the view of women as solely responsible for both their own behavior and the behavior of men. Society has accepted this “innate sexual aggression” of men and masculinity to the point where it is only the women’s job to avoid sex. It seems to be assumed that men are unable to do so, and therefore have no role in helping to curb HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases (according to the South African major who proposed the scholarship program).
