After vigorously googling different business professions, these were the top hits for each of the job searches.  I was surprised, and I wasn’t, at each of the job searches.  At my current job as an advisor at an accounting firm, I get to see the gender distributions firsthand, and searched jobs that corresponded to professions around my office.  It’s a large company, so it does a good job of representing a typical large US company.  From what I’ve seen, the CEO, and most of the top leaders in the firm are men.  However, a lot of the managers, and partners are women, and my intern class, as well as my team are predominately women.  Accounting firms have come a long way in terms of equal opportunity hiring, because years ago there were hardly any women in this profession, now if you google “accountants at work” there isn’t a single man.  Now, with the high up management, and why there isn’t a woman in the senior executives, which isn’t the case across all accounting firms, but it isn’t common because the corporate ladder is a long one to navigate.  In the reading, it mentions “only 4 percent of women are fortune 500 CEOs”(Pedula, 116, 2015), however is this due to current inequalities that exist?  We all know that industry has become exponentially progressive, in 1995, there weren’t any women CEOs, and now it is pushing 6%.  These are the largest companies in the world, which doesn’t accurately portray what is happening in the business world today.  Many CEOs of these companies have had to work for 25 years on the lower end, to get to where they are today.  If most of the women didn’t even begin getting brought into certain positions in these companies in large numbers until recently, if the number of woman CEOs was higher, it wouldn’t make statistical sense.  In the next 20 years that number is going to increase exponentially, and there might even be more women then men CEOs in the fortune 500.



The two fields in business that are still unequal are investment banking, technical, and human resources.  First off, human resources is still largely dominated by women, and I don’t think that the google search accurately portrayed that discrepancy.  Next would be investment banking.  Investment banking is probably the most conservative field in business.  It is still heavily dominated by men, and the women that work there aren’t treated equally.  Finally, the last field, IT.  As shown above, it is only men that are portrayed as IT consultants.  I don’t know what exactly it is about this field that deters women, if it’s the social context, or the influences aren’t there, or if it’s similar to engineering where they can be seen as distractions in the workplace.  Whatever it is, there are still some definite strides that need to be made in the workforce, but if other industries follow accounting, gender will be a second thought in the workplace.
